Why Accurate Measurement Matters

Getting the right rubber track size is critical. An incorrectly sized track won't fit your machine, or worse, could damage your undercarriage. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure your rubber tracks.

The Three Key Measurements

Rubber track sizes are expressed as Width x Pitch x Links (e.g., 400x86x52). Here's what each measurement means:

1. Track Width

  • Measured in millimeters (mm)
  • The total width of the track from edge to edge
  • Common widths: 300mm, 320mm, 400mm, 450mm
  • How to measure: Use a tape measure across the widest part of the track, perpendicular to the track's direction.

    2. Pitch

  • Measured in millimeters (mm)
  • The distance from the center of one link to the center of the next link
  • Common pitches: 52.5mm, 72.5mm, 86mm, 101.6mm
  • How to measure: Measure from the center of one metal core/link to the center of the adjacent link. Repeat 3-4 times and average for accuracy.

    3. Number of Links

  • Simply count the total number of links in the track
  • Common link counts: 48, 52, 56, 72, 80
  • How to count: Find a starting point (like a splice or marked link) and count each individual link around the entire track.

    Common Measurement Mistakes

  • Measuring worn tracks - Worn tracks may measure differently than their spec size
  • Confusing pitch with tread spacing - Pitch is link-to-link, not tread-to-tread
  • Measuring outer diameter - We need width, not circumference
  • Not accounting for stretch - Old tracks may have stretched
  • Pro Tips

  • Always measure in millimeters for accuracy
  • Take multiple measurements and average them
  • When in doubt, check your machine's manual or call us
  • If your tracks are heavily worn, measure a new section if possible
